In collaboration with roaddanger.org, my project group and I conducted research on dehumanization in news articles about traffic accidents. In many of these articles, victims are referred to by the vehicle they were in, rather than as human beings. This can lead to increased acceptance of traffic accidents and reduced empathy for the victims.
To inform journalists about what they could pay attention to, we wrote a roadmap for journalists and created a ‘dehumanization checker’ that uses AI to assess the level of humanization.
